From Citronella Oil to High-Value Natural Aroma Ingredients

Citronella oil is a natural essential oil obtained through the steam distillation of aromatic grasses. Naturally, citronella oil contains various valuable aroma compounds, including citronellal, citronellol, and geraniol, which contribute to its characteristic fresh citrus-green aroma. Because of its natural origin and versatile properties, citronella oil is widely used in fragrance, personal care, household, and wellness applications.
Through fractionation and purification processes, the composition of citronella oil can be selectively enriched to increase the concentration of specific compounds. During this process, PT Mitra Ayu can obtain natural citronellal isolates with concentrations of up to 95%, which can be further processed as a raw material for para-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), a naturally derived insect repellent active ingredient.
Citronellol can also be significantly enriched through selective fractionation, transforming the original essential oil into a higher-value natural isolate with greater purity and consistency. As the citronellol content becomes more concentrated, the material gains higher commercial potential as a natural fragrance ingredient. Citronellol is especially appreciated for its soft floral, rosy, and citrus-like character, making it highly desirable in perfumes, soaps, lotions, and personal care formulations. The purified natural isolate also provides greater formulation flexibility for downstream industrial applications.
One important application of high-purity citronellol is as a raw material for ester production. Through esterification, citronellol can be converted into citronellyl acetate, a compound known for its elegant, smooth, and sweet floral-citrus aroma. Because the starting material originates from natural citronella oil, citronellyl acetate produced from naturally derived citronellol can support the growing demand for natural-origin aroma ingredients.
Beyond citronellol, citronella oil can also serve as a source of natural geraniol. Through selective fractionation and purification, geraniol can be enriched into a natural isolate with a characteristic sweet, floral, rosy, and slightly citrusy aroma. This natural geraniol can subsequently be used as a valuable fragrance ingredient or further processed through esterification to produce natural geranyl acetate, an ester with a soft, fresh, floral-fruity aroma that is widely valued in fragrance applications.
The fractionation of citronella oil can also provide an opportunity to obtain natural rhodinol isolates. Rhodinol is a valuable fragrance material associated with soft, rosy, floral, and fresh characteristics. By selectively enriching the relevant alcohol fraction, citronella-derived rhodinol can be developed into a higher-value natural fragrance ingredient for fine fragrance, personal care, and other perfumery applications.
By combining natural extraction, selective fractionation, purification, and derivative technologies, PT Mitra Ayu transforms Indonesian citronella oil into higher-value specialty ingredients while maintaining its natural-origin positioning. This approach demonstrates how innovation and process expertise can unlock greater value from Indonesia's natural resources and create sustainable, high-performance aroma materials for modern fragrance, personal care, and related industries. For more information about our citronella oil and its derivative products, please contact us at info@ptmitraayu.com.
