International Day for Biological Diversity 2026: Protecting Nature Through Sustainable Cultivation and Ethical Sourcing

Every year on May 22, the world celebrates the International Day for Biological Diversity — a reminder of the importance of protecting ecosystems, preserving plant species, and creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.

For companies involved in natural ingredients, biodiversity is not only an environmental responsibility, but also the foundation of long-term sustainability. At PT Mitra Ayu, biodiversity conservation is closely connected to how we cultivate, source, and work together with local communities across Indonesia.

Supporting Biodiversity

In Solok and Mentawai, PT Mitra Ayu manages approximately 500 hectares of plantations dedicated to the cultivation and preservation of various aromatic and essential oil-producing plants, including Massoia, Citronella, Vetiver, Eucalyptus citriodora, Cinnamon, and many others.

These plantations are not only intended for cultivation, but also serve as educational and training facilities for local farmers. Through free seed distribution and agricultural training programs, PT Mitra Ayu supports community empowerment while encouraging more sustainable farming practices.

One important approach implemented in these plantations is intercropping — cultivating multiple plant species together within the same area. This practice helps improve biodiversity, supports healthier soil ecosystems, reduces environmental stress, and creates more resilient agricultural systems.

Working Together for Environmental Restoration

Beyond plantation activities, PT Mitra Ayu also collaborates with local governments and communities in environmental restoration initiatives. One major project involved the planting of one million trees along coastal areas as part of tsunami mitigation efforts. Coastal vegetation play an important role in reducing erosion, protecting coastal ecosystems, and strengthening natural barriers against environmental disasters.

In another collaboration project on former mining land, Vetiver grass was planted to help prevent erosion and support land rehabilitation. Known for its deep root systems, Vetiver is widely recognized for its ability to stabilize soil and contribute to ecosystem recovery in degraded areas. These initiatives reflect the belief that sustainability must go beyond production — it should also contribute positively to surrounding communities and ecosystems.

Ethical Wild Harvesting of Massoia Bark in Papua

Indonesia is home to unique botanical resources found nowhere else in the world, including Massoia Tree from Papua. At PT Mitra Ayu, Massoia bark is sourced through wild harvesting practices carried out in partnership with local communities. Ethical harvesting methods are encouraged through selective bark harvesting, traceability systems, and natural regeneration practices that help maintain forest sustainability over time.

By working closely with local harvesters and promoting responsible sourcing, PT Mitra Ayu aims to support both biodiversity preservation and the livelihoods of native communities connected to the forests of Papua.

Building a More Sustainable Future Together

Protecting biodiversity requires long-term collaboration between industries, governments, communities, and consumers. As demand for natural ingredients continues to grow globally, sustainable cultivation and ethical sourcing become increasingly important for the future of the flavor, fragrance, and wellness industries.

At PT Mitra Ayu, we remain committed to supporting biodiversity through responsible sourcing, community empowerment, and environmental initiatives across Indonesia.
